Program overview

Choices and Changes is an evidence-based program which is approved and accredited by The College of Family Physicians of Canada. This four hour FREE workshop would be led by two faculty trained members from the Institute of Healthcare Communication.

Clinicians frequently express frustrations about patient behaviour and the impact of that behviour on health outcomes. Choices and Changes is a four and a half hour workshopdirected to the needs of clinicians working within the rigors of contemporary medical practice. The program provides the clinician with specific strategies that can be utilized within the highly time limited constraints of the typical office visit. Videotaped case studies around realistic issues involving patients who have diabetes, smoke and are reluctant to make medical decisions are used so participants can practice using time saving strategies and receive feedback from their peers. This workshop is a valuable resource designed to assist healthcare providers  to become more effective in engaging clients in positive healthy behaviours to optimize health outcomes.

This program has been recognized by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care as part of the Chronic Disease Management initiative. The MOHLTC has recognized the increasing needs of heath care professionals and has provided permanent funding to allow the program to run throughout the province.
At the completion of the workshops, participants will have been provided with:

  • conceptual models for effective clinician-patient communication and facilitation of patient health behaviour change and self-management;
  • opportunities for practice and immediate feedback to improve their own clinical interviewing and behaviour change counseling skills;
  • opportunities to reflect upon their practices as clinicians, teachers and individuals participating in an educational experience;
  • a personal workbook and a certificate of completion
