Harm Reduction

Wednesday, August 09, 2017

WECHC is working closely with the ECS LHIN and other community organizations, including the City of Windsor and Windsor Essex Health Unit to develop various strategies and action plans to address this issue.

As a first step in this direction, WECHC is pleased to announce that we have repurposed $20,000 of our 2017/18 budget to install a sharps disposal unit on the front of Street Health at 711 Pelissier and to purchase various harm reduction supplies.

Harm reduction kits will be available at Street Health, Leamington and various mobile locations. Street Health serves the homeless, near homeless and those at risk of homelessness. Various services are available including primary care, counselling, foot care, dental services, identification replacement, showers, and laundry facilities. Naloxone kits and education are available at Street Health and our staff are trained in administering the drug in the event of an overdose.

WECHC is the regional provider of HEP C services in the Erie St. Clair LHIN area. The HEP C team provides education, testing, treatment and support. Support is provided before, during and after treatment including follow up care. Support is also available through individual and group counselling, support with family, friends and caregivers to help manage your health.

The opioid crisis is a multi-faceted problem that will require a multitude of approaches to address the issue. WECHC is committed to working with our community partners to develop various strategies and actions. Our primary focus is providing the best possible care for our vulnerable population and ensuring equitable, safe, quality care that is client centered and close to home.
