PUBLIC SHARPS DISPOSAL KIOSK

9/15/2017

For Immediate Release - September 12, 2017

As part of our mandate to support the health and wellness of our vulnerable population, Windsor Essex Community Health Centre announces the installation of a public sharps disposal Kiosk in the front of its Street Health location at 711 Pelissier Street and is available for immediate use.

The unit is securely mounted in a highly visible area on the exterior of the building and monitored 24/7 by our security cameras for the protection of property and personal safety. The large chute ensures all needles, syringes and containers are deposited without the ability to be retrieved once deposited. Patrick Brown, Executive Director says “Windsor Essex Community Health Centre is pleased to provide the first outdoor sharps disposal kiosk available on a 24/7/365 basis to the Windsor area. The sharps disposal kiosk is part of WECHC’s commitment to protecting our vulnerable clients. WECHC has repurposed $20,000 of the operating budget for the purpose of enhancing these strategies. The funds will be used to purchase the kiosk, disposal of needles and distribution of harm reduction supplies.”

Mayor Drew Dilkens supports the kiosk project saying, “This initiative will improve safety for our residents and neighbourhoods. The provision of safe and secure sharps disposal units has proven effective in other communities to reduce the number of needles discarded in public spaces. I applaud the initiative taken by the Community Health Centre and look forward to the implementation of more best practices from the collaborative of community partners working to improve the community”.

Ralph Ganter, CEO, Erie St. Clair LHIN supports the WE CHC initiative saying, “The Erie St. Clair LHIN is proud to support the Windsor Essex CHC and their introduction of an outdoor sharps disposal kiosk. The new sharps kiosk will help to ensure that people have access to a safe sharps disposal option and, in addition, it is an important part of opioid harm reduction. Today’s announcement is an important step in helping our communities to be safer, more compassionate, and healthier.”
